My Ratchet Life Lately: Boston Edition

Since I have not written on my blog in forever and a million years, I thought I would write a little about what I have been up to lately.

Because really though, who does not want to know about my exciting life?

I mean it is all about ME here, people!

But truly, I digress.

Here is my My Ratchet Life Lately: Boston Edition.

Spending My Days

If you were not aware, I live at the beach here in Mass. And since it is summer, life is currently spent doing a whole lot of this:

Roasting my body until it is well done.
#liketheThanksgivingturkey

I absolutely love living across the street from a beach. I simply get out of bed, toss on my swimsuit and walk to my spot. Perfectamundo!

We get the best sunsets and sunrises here on the beach and the scenery is beautiful.

Watching

I recently watched two horror movies that were new to me and both were extremely well done. If you are a horror fan like me, I highly recommend them!

Train To Busan is a Korean horror film with subtitles. I know, I KNOW, some people cannot deal with subtitles, but trust me, this movie is worth every second! Seok-woo is a workaholic and divorced father. His little girl, Soo-an, has grown tired of him never being around. She insists on going to Busan for her birthday to be with her mother. The two board a train in Seoul and at the exact same moment, a zombie virus erupts in South Korea. Oh, and one of the infected boards the train without the knowledge of the passengers. It is a total wild ride every moment waiting to see who will escape the zombie train ride! The acting is excellent and you will get attached to the characters. This is definitely one of my favorite zombie movies.

(Train To Busan is currently free on Netflix)

Hell House LLC is a low budget "found footage" documentary. Before I go any further, let me make it clear that I DO NOT LIKE "found footage." But, BUT, after reading some reviews praising the movie, I decided to watch. I was delightfully surprised! This movie is actually quite scary and I even covered my eyes a few times. The film is about a group of people who run haunted houses on Halloween. On the opening night of a haunted house the people created in an abandoned hotel in New York, something goes horribly wrong. Tour goers and members of Hell House LLC are killed and no knows why or what happened. The documentary makers are trying to learn the secrets of Hell House and are given footage taken by the members. There is a twist ending and the movie creeped me out so much, I was checking behind my shoulder when I walked my dogs that night!

(Hell House LLC is currently free for Amazon Prime subscribers)

Reading

I recently re-read and purchased (I first read this free online) Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. My friend Karen at A Peek At Karen's World would tell you this is your typical "depressing YA novel." (love ya Karen ;) ) And, it sort of is in a way. But, BUT, it reads like poetry at times and has some of the most beautiful words about death, life and most of all, the importance of your life. Samantha's personal journey is one of my favorites to read and it really made me think about how much your life, your words, your patience and love or lack thereof for humanity can really affect others.

If you do not own this book, it is a must read!

Listening To

TLC "Way Back"

YAY! The 90s are back and TLC is releasing (more) new music! These ladies defined my 90s. I loved their music so much and really miss Lisa aka Left Eye. She would be so proud of Chili and T-Boz for rocking on into 2017. Get it ladies!

Editor's Note: I used a TLC song on my wedding video "Meant To Be." Such a great song, too!

Thinking About

I fell down the rabbit hole over the weekend and became captivated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts v. Michelle Carter. Carter is the young woman who texted 18 year old Conrad Roy III, repeatedly, encouraging him to commit suicide in 2014. After the guilty verdict was released, I went to YouTube to watch her trial. As a lawyer, I find the legal standpoint fascinating. And as a human being, I am incredibly sad for the family and the local communities involved.

There is a lot of talk in the nation about this verdict (Michelle was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter), wether it was legal, and about what this means for freedom of speech. However, I believe that our laws have to catch up with the 21st Century and we, as adults, have a duty to protect our children. The digital world has become a dangerous, evil place and we must create laws to keep our children alive and safe.

If you read about this case or watch the trial here, let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Preparing For

A trip home to see my family in Louisiana! We leave on Saturday morning. I have not seen my family in over six months (wow, have I really been in Boston that long??). It will be nice to finally give my mom and dad a big hug again.

Not to mention, I am getting my stomach full of yummy Tex-Mex and getting my absolute fave:

SONIC!

Mass, you need to step up your Sonic game. I need my cherry slush and my cherry limeade in the summer.

What are you up to this summer? Have you read or watched anything interesting? Are you planning a fun vacation? Let me know in the comments!

P.S. I miss you. Make sure you follow me on Instagram where I update more! Sam's Instagram

  5. With the turkey comment I thought back to a Thanksgiving in the late 60's where Mom read somewhere that the bird would be tender and juicy if you roasted it in a paper shopping bag. One problem, she didn't put anything under the Turkey to catch the juice and did it at a high temperature rather than low and slow as directed. The juice and grease simply soaked into the bag so when the turkey popped it's little "Timer" it broke through the bottom of the bag and all of the grease hit the burner and there was a giant fireball in the oven. My brother, who was about 10 said, "Mom the turkey just blew up" and it was the ONLY time I ever heard my Mom drop the F bomb. Dad just stood in the corner of the kitchen uttering "oh the humanity" before going out for KFC. That being said - re the trial - Ph.D. Criminal Justice here, not an attorney but I imagine, though this case really didn't fit the mold of involuntary manslaughter a it could be argued that words and texts are not "direct reckless actions" I would imagine the state will now consider criminalizing suicide. Thanks for the book suggestion - I still am blown away when I board a plane and see someone in business class reading one of my books - thanks for the update and what can I say SLUSHEEESSSSSS!!!

    1. Yeah, you have to get into the meat and potatoes of the case. There are 1000s of texts literally directing him to commit suicide, how to do it, where to do it, berating and belittling him when he did not do it - pure madness. This little girl was a monster. Motive? To get attention from a group of girls from school who were not really interested in her. She concocted a story that he had gone "missing" a few days before he died to these girls and they were starting to ask questions like why isn't there an Amber Alert, etc? At that point, she had to get him to do it so she could keep her act up as a grieving girlfriend (side note, she was talking to another boy at the same time she was interested in but called the boy who died the "love of her life"). It goes on and on with facts. Really a rabbit hole! She's definitely guilty of something....or some laws have to be passed to stop these teens from using social media/texting/etc from bullying their peers to death. I do agree Mass will most likely pass a law making it illegal to encourage suicide.

  6. So Jelly you live at the beach. I would love to step out my front door and be laying out on the beach. I will definitely have to check out that book by Lauren Oliver it sounds really good. Maybe I can read it in the pool if it would ever stop raining here ;)

I only caught bits of that trial in the news and on social media but it's so sad and you are right we have to be very vigilant on what our children are doing in this digital age.

Have fun in Louisiana. I hope it is beautiful weather for you and you get your fill of tex mex & slushies :)

I know as a mom you'd find the case interesting. It's just so sad and my heart goes out to the family and the small communities of both of the teenagers.

  9. I know nothing of Boston, but you make it look amazing! Our friends are finally headed that way in September, so I might end up there to visit eventually!
The Michelle Carter rabbit hole... I forgot where I first heard about this case (probably 20/20 or something like that) a good while ago! I think I would have been pretty upset had she not been found guilty!

  10. Oh, that case. I am COMPLETELY fascinated by it too. It's seriously heartbreaking for all parties. That girl is a total monster, and I agree with the verdict. I could go on and on with my thoughts on all of it, but at the end of the day I agree 100% with what you said - the legal system must catch up with the 21st century and what's happening with social media.

    1. I know girl, I could go on and on too. I don't even know what to say about her. Everytime I see Conrad Roy's mom on tv and hear her talk, I wish I had a time machine to go back and find that little monster and tell her to leave him the hell alone!!

  12. If I lived across the street from the beach, you'd better believe that I'd be there all day too! And I'm 100% with you about the verdict of that case. Our laws need to catch up with the times that we're in.

Now that I'm on a diet, I pretty much live for it because I can get a diet cherry limeade while I pick up some high-cal craziness for my husband. And then I come home and eat oatmeal with my diet cherry limeade. Yes, that's what my life has become!

I'm definitely going to add both of those movies to my list. I like a GOOD horror flick!

Also, I don't have a problem with depressing YA as a general rule! :-) I just think that's basically become its own sub-genre at this point!
