Rant: Quit Telling Us How To Blog

Now, you all know I am normally a positive person. But, BUT, today, I have a tiny bit of a rant. Well, I am not really angry or upset.

I am just Le Sigh to the 200th power:

My ratchet side is about to come out and play.

I read a lot of other bloggers posts, and lately, I have come across posts that are all about "blogging tips and tricks." Although these sorts of posts are as boring as watching a turd drying in the heat of the sun, I do not object to their relativity. Helpful tips are nice and appreciated.

What does bother me? Being told HOW to blog.

I often read posts like:

"Why Your Blog Isn't Popular" (Editor's Note: Because I get ratchet. Weave tossing ratchet.)

"Why No One Likes Your Blog" (Editor's Note: Cause you don't speak hoodrat?)

"Blogging Mistakes You Keep Making" (Editor's Note: My mistake #1 - Being a ghetto encyclopedia.)

and my personal favorite:

"Why I Won't Read Your Blog"

Look, I have to be honest. If you write a post called "Why I Won't Read Your Blog," I am over here like:

I mean, seriously. If you do not want to read my blog or someone else's blog, then do not bother. If a particular blog is not up to your standards, then keep it moving.

Go eat your cookies, drink your wine and do you, boo boo.

I'm not judging. But you're missing out.
#ratchetnessisgoodtimes

You see, if I never gained one single more person to read my blog, like Celine sang, my heart will go on. I am not obsessing over my blog follower numbers, how many comments I receive or what my monthly views are compared to last month. Do not get it twisted though. I LOVE you, my blogging friends and followers. You leave amazing comments and take time out of your day to read my blabbering.

I appreciate you all very much.

Aw. #grouphug

Swear I haven't been drinking.
Today. Yet. #butlatertho

Moreover, I love all your blogs. And it really bothers me that I am beginning to notice bloggers I enjoy reading becoming frustrated. They obsess over the numbers. They worry about what they are doing "wrong." And they do not have the time, finances or energy to be "perfect" and follow the 5,432,000 million tips from popular bloggers.

Neither do I, and I can promise you that I never will. You see, blogging is fun. I enjoy blogging.

If this ever stops being something I do not enjoy, then, well:

I will peace out this bitch.

I keep it simple and real over here. All of my pictures will more than likely be taken with my iPhone in lieu of the latest $2,000 Canon camera. I can guarantee I will not have Instagram perfect pictures on my blog. You know what I mean - the strategically posed Starbucks drink next to my MacBook and an Erin Condren planner that reads #GirlBoss (on that note, I really think Lisa Frank should come out of her 80s coma and bitchslap Erin Condren for jacking her style).

I also do not take photos that are shopped to DEATH and edited with 750 different filters.

Heads up. That shit is so weird. No one lives this way. NO ONE. Unless you were built by a computer.

Are you actually a robot?
If you are, let's take over the world. #Ultronstyle

My posts may not always be on schedule. Living my life away from social media comes first. When Military Husband is home, I want to spend time with him. I need to create memories, not focus on photographing them to receive compliments or prove something online.

I know, I KNOW. #gag

As most of you may have guessed, I am not overly interested in sponsorships. As a matter of fact, I rather loathe sponsored posts. They are void of any depth. No matter how you try to word it, you always come off sounding like a commercial. And no one like commercials.

That is why God invented the DVR, right?

Or someone did.

Not to say I mind anyone doing a few sponsored posts. I am not here to knock your hustle. And most likely, I will comment on your sponsored posts if they appear in my feed from time to time. However, unless Marvel calls, sponsored posts are really just not for me.

Marvel. Call me. #iloveyou

I write what I am passionate about on this blog. Whether or not it receives 1 or 100,000 views, I wrote it because it was something I loved, felt or thought.

Copying Pinterest posts or other bloggers to be popular is flat out lame. You will not see me doing any of that nonsense. Not to mention when every single blogger does the exact.SAME.post, it is about as dull as watching a marathon of Two Broke Girls. I have it out for that show, don't I?

But really though - why has it been on so damn long? It sucks.

Attention CBS, it really is the:

But truly I digress.

Point being my friends, just be yourself. BE yourself in everything you post.

R Kelly remains true to himself and he is, well:

On my blog, there will always be R Kelly.
#hebelieveshecansoar

Maybe not the best example. But really, just be you and show the world who you are through your words.

In conclusion, never be frustrated by those out there who are telling us how to blog. I love what you write and so do others. We enjoy hearing about your travels, your weekends, your diets, your workouts, your children, your family vacations, your recipes, your struggles, your highs and lows and all that make you unique. Please continue on writing that which makes you happy and pour your personality into your blog. Do not focus on the numbers. There is no magic formula to this, no matter what you read.

The simple fact is, if you keep writing, time and patience will bring in a loyal audience that appreciates YOU.

If someone does not want to read your blog, let it be. Their loss.

Don't forget, I am here cheering you on and we are:

Do you ever get frustrated reading posts that tell you how to blog or point out what you are doing wrong? What goals do you have for your blog? Let me know in the comments below!

  2. Amen!! I definitely fell into the trap when I first started out - worrying about numbers; should I be doing how-to posts; sponsored posts, etc but honey, I ain't got time for that...! My blog is my blog and I will post what I damn please. If you don't want to read it, then, Bye Felicia!

  3. I also hate how a lot of blogs are just "this is how to blog" blogs. I don't have big numbers either but I enjoy what I do. I sometimes get sponsored posts but even then, the number of page views are low so if companies want to pay for 5 people to look at it, who am I to say no. LOL. But seriously, people who make their whole lives look so perfect spend way too much time dicking around with filters instead of living their actual lives.

  6. Blogs are meant to be a voice of indivualism - they are all unique so why anyone would try to make them some cookie cutter formula is beyond us. We love your blog jut the way it is - it is you and we don't want you to change :)

  7. ommigoodness. Can I just hug you this morning? This has been on my mind for awhile and it is so hard to not get sucked down that vortex and remain true to why you starting blogging. I am printing this out and making it into a tshirt so I remember. I have more fun blogging when I blog the way I want to blog. And you know what, I enjoy blogging WAY more making connections with people you want to connect with me, not just cause I'm another number. Great great great post.

  8. This is the best!! I totally 100% agree. Those lists of how to make your blog popular are so dumb. My favorite posts to read are the ones where I get a glimpse into the person's real life, so I've been trying to do the same thing and not worry about the numbers.

  9. I am so over reading those blog posts. THey truly do get annoying and when I see it in the title, I just pass. Do you, that's the advice I give to people when it comes to blogging. I've lately haven't been blogging as much as I use too. Because life happens... and when I write, it's when I am ready to write and not just to please an audience.

by the way, all the GIFs in this post... AMAZEBALLS.

  12. Some people honestly do need the help. You wouldn't believe how many times I wanted to leave a comment on someone's page but couldn't think of a single thing to say. Some are personality differences, like if a woman posts about make-up I'm not going to have much to say. But some people post semi-readable non-sense.

    1. I think the main thing that these "why I won't read your blog" posts focus on are stuff like posting on schedule, making sure the topics are popular for views, having your pictures a certain way (like we are professional photographers), etc. I read a lot of blogs that just talk about whatever and that's fine! But then I see them get frustrated and want to quit because they see so many of these posts and it can be discouraging. There's no need to discourage someone. If you don't want to read their blog, don't.
But I do understand what you mean. :) Thanks for commenting!!!

  13. Amen to this! Most of those posts on why I'm not reading your blog...well, I am doing most of what they list. Oops. But as you said, I stay who I am. I will share the simple posts. I'll write about my quirky life. I'll share military spouse posts. Otherwise I won't enjoy blogging anymore and that would suck, because blogging helps keep me sane.

Seriously, I thought about what to do to grow it because you know, my work life is coming to a bankrupt end soon and I can't find real work so....it's that or walk the streets but I seriously do NOT know what makes those blogs that rake in $20000 a month great because their content isn't all that interesting.
That's my way of saying, bravo.

    1. I think a lot of the money is made through sponsorships. And to clarify to everyone, I have no problem with other people doing sponsorships. Do your thing. I just don't want to (and yes, I turn down opportunities weekly) unless it's something I truly, truly love and it's a company I trust, which basically means Marvel Studios. Hahahaha. ;) Will I read sponsored posts? Probably, if you are a blog I follow because I like to support the blogs I follow in every way.
I've recently been doing freelance posts for blogs. It is another way to earn income from blogging! It's definitely something to try!

I completely agree, both on sponsored content and other bloggers saying how to blog. If I'm offered a sponsorship, it better be as bad ass as the Bob Marley track jacket I received or something I WANT to review. You should watch the episode of South Park about sponsored content vs advertisements. Basically the entire (18th?) season.

  24. I write for marketing firms...and I'm often assigned to write "how to get more readers for your blogs" type posts. I wrote one last night titled "6 Tips for Getting Social Media Followers from Your Business Blog." But none of that applies to personal blogging. I think it's important to realize we're all here for different reasons. Some people want to sell books, some just want to let off steam, some want to share recipes...the key is to find YOUR community. But, of course, no matter why we blog, we blog because we like the interaction. There are many other ways to interact with others and market and whatever...especially with social media. This blogging community is awesome!

  27. Meh I hate those posts and I love this one. I blog because its fun - do I get paid? No. Do I give a shit? No. I have a job for that. You know what else gets under my skin? People who try to be fashion bloggers - like professionally - but are so far from it. I laugh - never mean to them - but God almighty do I laugh.

  33. Because you're cool and have stopped by my blog several times, you know that I do lots of product reviews and a few sponsored posts. It's something I do and am quite all right with. I'm quite all right if no one ever reads them...or any other post I do.
Bloggers need to stop comparing themselves to others or even other's numbers. We need to be in cooperation and lift each other up. I think you're a kick ass writer and love your humor. I'm semi-sorta jealous of that but that's what makes you you and me, well, me. My blog is no better than anyone else's and vice versa. I will say, though, that I tend to gravitate more towards blogs that are "real" with their life in their posts and their pics (the good, the bad, and the ugly).

  34. I get annoyed with e-mails telling me how to market my blog. (More for my book blog, but still.) Sometimes I do similar posts to other people, but only because I like their idea and want to use it with my own information. I don't mind if people do that from my blog too, as long as they are changing it to be personal to them. It's not about being popular though.
