Gamer Girl Guide: Awesome Games For Christmas 2015

Does someone in your life love video games? Do you have no idea what to buy them because you are not a gamer?

Does the idea of wandering around a Gamestop have you like:

I feel the EXACT same way when I am in a comic book store.
Tumblr hipsters are all kinds of NO.

Right. Well, I am here to help. If you were not aware, I really enjoy gaming. I get pretty involved in whatever game I am playing. And by involved I mean, there goes my life until I complete the game. #nerdalert

Who remembers arcades? #thisgirl #ancientstatus

This past spring, I wrote an entire blog post about Telltale Games The Walking Dead. You can read it here at:

Being a girl, I can be a bit picky as to the games I enjoy playing. My all time favorite is choose your own adventure. A choose your own adventure video game means that you make choices throughout the game, and those choices affect the outcome kind of like the butterfly effect. It is super cool because players make different choices based on their own moral and personal beliefs and values. I really enjoy this style of game, as do many other women.

Here is my list of video games I suggest buying the gaming girl in your life for Christmas:

Telltale Games The Walking Dead (Seasons 1 & 2)

This is my favorite choose your own adventure game of all time. Never, ever have I been so involved in a story that I was literally moved to tears at its Season 1 conclusion. If you are a fan of AMC's The Walking Dead, you will enjoy seeing Glen and Hershel in Season 1. But, BUT, this is entirely different than the show. You play Season 1 as Lee Everett, a former professor who has been convicted for killing a state senator who slept with Lee's wife.

When the zombie apocalypse begins, Lee is on his way to prison. He eventually finds his way to a little girl named Clementine whose parents were in Savannah during the apocalypse. He becomes her father figure, and guides her throughout the game.

Lee is an amazingly well written and complex character. He is wise, reasonable, honest and forthright. Basically, Lee is the kind of person you would enjoy having as a friend.

Without spoiling Season 2, I can honestly say it is just as brilliant and enjoyable. Anyone would like playing this game, including non-gamers.

Available on Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Life Is Strange

Square Enix deserves all kinds of awards for this game. This is another choose your own adventure game. Your choices REALLY do matter, and at times, can be difficult to make (I spent a day deciding what to do for once choice. I know, I KNOW - I am a geek.). You play as Max Caulfield, a senior at Blackwell Academy, who learns she has the ability to rewind time. With this power, she can change the outcome of almost any event she encounters upon her journey.

What is most enjoyable about this game is Max's interaction with her best friend Chloe. There is so much depth, compassion and beauty poured into the writing of the friendship between these two girls. At its conclusion, I was deeply saddened, but decidedly firm on my choices for the characters.

Life is Strange is one to pick up for any female gamer.

Available on Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Beyond Two Souls

Quantic Dream's choose your own adventure games are some of my favorites. By combining voice acting and motion capture acting, you feel like you are inside a movie set while playing. You play as Jodie, voice and acted by Ellen Page, a young woman with a psychic connection to an entity named Aiden. Through Aiden, she can perform telepathic acts such as mind possession and moving objects.

As a child, Jodie is placed in the custody of two doctors played by Willem Dafoe and Kadeem Harrison (Dwayne Wayne of the 80s sitcom A Different World).

As Jodie grows older, she is recruited by the CIA and, as you control Jodie, you uncover a world of  spirits, government conspiracy and drama.

Military Husband bought this game for me Christmas 2013 and I completed it in a few days. And then, I played it again. Another choose your own adventure game, there are multiple endings for Beyond Two Souls. I was not particularly fond of my first ending, so I played it again to achieve the ending I wanted for Jodie. To this date, I have still not played the game to achieve all of its endings. However, it was recently re-released for Playstation 4 with enhancements. I would love to play the new version.

I highly recommend Beyond Two Souls for any gamer. Although it does involve choices, it has a good bit of action that really keeps you on the edge of your seat!

Available on Playstation 3 and Playstation 4.

Until Dawn

Until Dawn was the most exciting game to launch this year. Finally, thanks to Sony, we have a game for horror movie fans. Your choices, along with the completion of certain action sequences, all affect the outcome of the game.

Like Beyond Two Souls, this game combines voice acting and motion capture acting which makes the feel extremely realistic. My Marvel family will recognize one of the actors from Until Dawn - Brett Dalton from Agents of Shield.

Until Dawn gathers seven friends at their annual winter getaway at the Blackwood Pines Lodge in Alberta, Canada. The lodge is owned by their mutual friends, Josh and his twin sisters, Hannah and Beth. After five of them play a prank on Hannah, the sisters go "missing," aka presumed dead. One year later, the seven friends gather at the lodge again at the invitation of Josh. Nothing says bad news like heading to a secluded lodge in the dark snowy woods after something really BAD happened.

You play as ALL eight different characters. The goal? Keep them all alive.

I highly suggest you do not play this game with your headphones on in the dark. It is frightening fun! This would be an awesome gift for ANY gamer.

Available only on Playstation 4.

I hope this gives you a few suggestions of what games to buy the gamer girl or even guy in your life.  When all else fails, nothing says love like a gift card to Gamestop, Playstation Store or Xbox Marketplace. And yes, this is an AWESOME simple gift for a gamer. Military Husband and I use gift cards to download games throughout the year!

Do you or any of your loved ones play video games? Will you be purchasing video games for Christmas? What games do you/they like? Let me know in the comments below!

Happy Holidays and Great Gaming, I am,

  8. My brother can sit and play games on his computer for HOURS. Alas, I have no attention span and no hand-eye coordination, so video games and me don't get along. I'll stick to Tripletown.

Every time I step into Gamestop, I must look like a lost child because usually every single employee comes running over to help me.

  21. Okay, I gotta admit, I'm not a gamer, but some of my adult children are. I can't believe how realistic these games look now---it's like stepping into another dimension/reality or something. Freaky, but I can see why so many people get hooked on them.
