10 Reasons Every Woman Should Care About Agent Carter

If you knew me in real life, you would know my Marvel obsession is real. If something is happening or will happen in the MCU, I must know.

I am not really certain why it has taken so long for me to post about my love for Marvel Comics. Probably my obsession with enthralling you all with the details of my life in Hoodrat Central. In all seriousness folks, I grew up in upper middle class suburbia. I am about as gangster as Cher Horowitz.

But truly I digress.

Anyhoo, in today's post I would like talk about my current favorite Marvel obsession, ABC's midseason Marvel series, Agent Carter.

If you are not familiar with Agent Peggy Carter, well, back in the 1940s, she worked as an agent for the SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), a top secret government agency formed to fight against HYDRA, the Nazi Superweapons Division.  She made her first debut in Marvel Comics around 1966, as the wartime love interest of Captain America, and in Marvel films with her appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger.  I could go on, but by this point, most of you are like:

Right. Actually, I have to admit, when I learned Marvel's Agent Carter was coming to television and it was a period piece set in 1946, I was kind of like:

For that reason, I totally did not watch the show when it aired this past Spring.

I only became really intrigued because 1) Agent Carter was produced and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the duo who were the screenwriters on the Chronicles of Narnia franchise, and all three Captain America films, including the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. Captain America: The Winter Soldier quite possibly might be one of the best films in the Marvel franchise thus far; and 2) I kept reading reviews that read Agent Carter was a sort of badass feminist, which really intrigued me.

Thus, my husband purchased Marvel's Agent Carter: The Complete First Season on Amazon and we proceeded to binge watch all eight episodes at record speed.

Now, I would like to to give you a few reasons why you ladies should truly care about Peggy Carter, even if you are not into comic books or Marvel movies or anything of the sort. You see, Agent Carter might be the most formidable character for women that has appeared in television and movies in years.  In a sea of television shows created largely for a male audience, finally, we have someone our little girls can look up to, and this, my friends, matters.

Disclaimer: These reasons will be given in a "demonstrative manner" which means my head spun around and I went into maximum GIF overdrive. It happens. Sing with me folks, "I write the Lifetime recaps that put me in lots of pain, I write the Lifetime recaps that make me lose my brain, those damn movies are driving me insane, I am GIFFing (is that a word? if not, Ensign, make it so!), cause Lifetime's a pain."

Here are my 10 Reasons Why Every Woman Should Care About Agent Carter:

1) Agent Carter never lets men stand in her way.

Agent Carter's co-workers treat her like she is little more than a secretary and see her as invisible.  And Agent Carter uses all of this to her advantage. She spies on her male counterparts, gathers information and gets the job done on her own, without any help from them.

Even in her Marvel movie cameos, Agent Carter is no damsel in distress that fancies herself a "helpless" woman.

2) Agent Carter is a badass.

As a teenager, Peggy Carter was trained to shoot weapons, and she is certainly not afraid to take down the bad guys.

Nor is she afraid to use physical force on anyone when necessary.

And then be like:

So, if you like women who kick ass, you will LOVE Agent Carter.

3) Agent Carter has no time for any man's sexist bullshit.

When Peggy Carter hears or sees any misogynistic behavior, she is all:

She really has no time for the nonsense (largely because there is ass kicking and name taking to be done, see 2)).

She also has a great sense of wit, that puts the men right in their place.

4) Agent Carter owns who she is and accepts responsibility for her choices.

Something we all strive to do in life.

5) Agent Carter speaks her mind.

6) Agent Carter demands the respect of her male colleagues.

And they really should because:

7) Plus, Peggy Carter does it all while being both feminine and beautiful.

As an aside, Hayley Atwell, who plays Agent Carter, is currently one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. She barely wears any makeup in photographs, and was practically bare-face at San Diego Comic Con this year. She even has said in interviews she does not really often wear makeup, and would rather be in jeans and a t-shirt any given day of the week. In a time when teenagers are obsessed with the overly made up Kardashians, it is about time we had a Hayley Atwell around!

She is the real deal.

8) Not to mention, Hayley Atwell understands how important the role of Agent Carter is for young women.

This interview makes me love her even more.

9) Captain America has one deep, dark regret: he never got that dance with Peggy Carter.

One thing I learned from Age of Ultron, the Avengers have a lot of angst and fears. Captain America's?  He never got to be with Peggy Carter.

You have to be pretty awesome to be the one true love of Captain America.

Of course, it is pretty messed up that Captain America later has a love affair with Peggy's niece Sharon, Agent 13. But, yeah, we are talking about Peggy Carter, not Steve Rogers.

10) Agent Carter knows her worth.

This quote says it all:

I hope ALL of you ladies know how valuable you are, whether it is as a mother, a wife, an entrepreneur, an employer, an employee, a friend or a daughter - in all and every role you have as a woman you have worth. This is something that was distilled in me at a very young age, largely due to my mother, who was and is extremely strong willed.  I know this quote will be on my daughter's wall because knowing your self worth is half the battle of being an incredible human being.

Best freaking coffee mug EVER.

Agent Carter returns to ABC January 19, 2016. You can find my Season 2 Recaps here: Marvel Forever.
